Description
The primary North Facade is characterized by its asymmetry and a series of massive, multi-story art studio windows designed to harvest indirect daylight. It features a highly stylized, off-center entrance portal adorned with abstract stone reliefs and intricate wrought-iron brackets representing stylized plant forms. The West Facade on Scott Street presents dramatic, soaring oriel-like window bays that span three stories to illuminate the interior library. The East Facade is more traditional, featuring punched openings and a Scottish Baronial turret. The South Facade is a utilitarian, harled (roughcast) brick wall designed with irregular windows reflecting the service spaces behind it.
Visual analysis
The visual tension lies between the heavy, permanent feel of the grey-blonde sandstone and the delicate, organic nature of the wrought-iron brackets and grids of glass, making the building feel simultaneously ancient and industrial.
