Facade concept

A nearly cubic, dome-less prayer-hall mass recalls the Kaaba while long arcaded wings, elevated courts and entrance porticoes establish a monumental civic plinth in central Dhaka.

Envelope system and materials

The principal cube is predominantly opaque and visually massive, with controlled high-level openings and recessed entrances. Arcaded lower wings and porticoes create a porous perimeter around the elevated prayer hall.

Reinforced concrete and masonry, pale stone or rendered finishes, marble/stone paving, metal grilles and doors, glazing and later extension materials.

Structure, climate and shading

Structure. A multi-storey reinforced-concrete/masonry complex carries the large prayer spaces, arcades and high platform. Public sources do not provide a verified complete original structural grid or wall build-up.

Climate response. Two open courts, verandas and high-level volume support daylight and air movement. Arcades and deep entrances shelter circulation from intense sun and monsoon rain.

Shading and daylight. Recessed arches, long colonnades, roofed porticoes and the deep base protect openings. The large central cube limits exposed glazing and relies on controlled openings rather than a transparent façade.

Fabrication, details and lifecycle

Fabrication. The original composition depends on disciplined symmetry, repeated arches and a visually continuous pale surface. Extensions have altered some edges and should be recorded as later layers.

Key details. The cuboid prayer hall, horizontal bands, three-arched porticoes, long arcades, elevated eastern court and contrasting minaret form the recognizable ensemble.

Maintenance. Large exposed surfaces, paving joints, waterproofed roofs, façade staining, metalwork and the interfaces between original and extended fabric require regular inspection in Dhaka’s humid, polluted environment.

Performance evidence

The passive spatial logic is evident, but measured energy, ventilation rates and envelope performance are not public. Later extensions and mechanical systems must be distinguished from the original design.

Significance

A rare twentieth-century national mosque whose façade identity is based on abstract mass, civic scale and controlled ornament rather than a conventional dome-and-minaret composition.

Visual analysis

Cultural and urban reading

Cultural reading. The abstract cube directly references the Kaaba while avoiding an applied historicist dome. Mughal-derived garden and arcade traditions are simplified through modern construction.

Urban role. The mosque occupies a large elevated precinct within dense commercial Dhaka, mediating huge congregational flows through courts, stairs, arcades and surrounding mixed-use edges.
