Facade facts

Facade summary
An intricate,load-bearing envelope of modular,post-tensioned natural stone panels,featuring parabolic geometries,large open lancet-style windows,and ornamental glass-mosaic finials.
Documented intention
Gaudí designed the towers to be permeable to light and sound, functioning as gigantic campaniles while illuminating the interior of the church. The complex geometry of the openings was intended to optimize acoustic projection and natural light transmission.
Street relationship
Rising high above the Eixample district, the towers dominate the skyline of Barcelona, functioning as symbolic landmarks visible from miles away.
Climate relationship
The open geometries of the stone vents and window slots are configured to allow prevailing Mediterranean winds to pass through, reducing wind-drag coefficients on the massive vertical structures.
Window pattern
Regular spiraling or vertical geometric arrays based on hyperbolic geometries.
Glazing
Single or double glazing integrated into structural stone frames, some containing decorative glass art.
Depth
Deep three-dimensional articulation created by the intersection of hyperbolic-paraboloid stone surfaces.
Rhythm
Vertical ascent with spiraling geometric motifs.
Granite
Granite — Primary external load-bearing panels — Split-face,honed,and CNC-carved geometric profiles
Stainless Steel
Stainless Steel — Internal tensioning rods inside the stone panels — Hidden from external view
Venetian Glass Mosaic
Venetian Glass Mosaic — Pinnacles and terminal elements of the towers — Reflective,multi-faceted tiles
Post-Tensioned Stone Panel System
Pre-fabricated panels composed of individual stone blocks joined with epoxy resins and compressed together with internal high-strength stainless steel tension rods.

Post-tensioned stone panel system

Description

The facade of the central towers consists of load-bearing stone panels designed to resist seismic and wind forces through internal vertical post-tensioning. The geometry relies on Gaudí's ruled surfaces, particularly hyperboloids and paraboloids. The stone is predominantly granite of varying tones cut with absolute precision using digital fabrication (CNC). The windows are integrated directly into these structural stone frames, featuring triangular or rhomboidal openings. The terminations of the towers feature highly decorative pinnacles clad in Venetian glass mosaics.

Visual analysis

Visually, the towers present a highly articulated texture of stone ribs and geometric perforations. The horizontal joints between the pre-fabricated stone panels are minimally visible, preserving the illusion of a monolithic carved stone structure.
