Facade facts

Facade summary
A complex envelope of interlocking circular discs of varying diameters clad in sand-colored GFRC panels, which provide structural self-shading and house deeply recessed glass windows.
Documented intention
Jean Nouvel conceived the facade to represent a desert rose, symbolizing the region's mineral identity. The design was calculated to offer a highly responsive envelope for Qatar's hot climate: the massive cantilevered discs serve as functional self-shading elements, preventing direct sunlight from hitting glazed surfaces.
Street relationship
The low-slung, multi-layered silhouette sits comfortably alongside the historic palace. At ground level, the discs swoop down to form sheltered pathways,transition zones,and shaded pedestrian spaces.
Climate relationship
The building envelope acts as an active climatic shield. The cantilevered GFRC discs block intense high-angle sun, reducing thermal radiation and significantly lowering mechanical cooling demands within the building envelope.
Window pattern
Windows are restricted exclusively to the interstitial voids where the circular discs meet,avoiding open vertical facade faces.
Glazing
Double-glazed unit with selective high-performance low-E coatings.

Description

The facade is formed of massive, intersecting circular discs of varying diameters and angles. The discs are structurally framed with steel and clad in custom-molded glass fiber reinforced concrete (GFRC) panels. These panels are colored and textured to resemble desert sand. Radial joints segment each disc into a geometric pattern. The intersections of these disks create deep shadow-filled cavities and overhangs. Inside these deep recesses, glazed window units are installed, shielded from the direct glare and intensive heat of the desert sun.

Visual analysis

Visually, the building dissolves the line between horizontal roof and vertical wall, as each disc bends to assume both roles. The pale, warm sand tone and matte texture of the panels anchor the structure to its desert landscape, while the deep shadows cast by the overlapping volumes create a continuously changing geometric contrast throughout the day.
