Facade summary
A monolithic gabion wall structure made of galvanized wire baskets filled with local basalt rocks. The density of the stones is varied to allow natural light and air to penetrate where needed.
Documented intention
The architects sought to create a building that blends with the earthy, volcanic landscape of Napa Valley. By using gabions,they integrated a low-cost, civil-engineering method to resolve the intense local climate issues, utilizing the thermal mass of the basalt to avoid heavy reliance on active mechanical cooling.
Street relationship
The linear pavilion sits parallel to the valley floor, set back far from main public roads, acting as an artificial geological landform in the vineyard rather than reacting to a street frontage.
Climate relationship
The high thermal mass of the basalt absorbs daytime solar heat and slowly radiates it during the cold night, stabilizing interior temperatures. The gaps between the loosely packed stones act as a natural wind screen,allowing gentle,filtered air circulation.

Irregularly arranged large glazed panels situated directly behind the porous zones of the gabion screen, providing daylight without direct solar heat gain.

Description

The facade consists of heavy wire-mesh gabions filled with dark local basalt stones. The stones vary in size and are packed to different densities. At the base, smaller, tightly-packed stones form an opaque, dense barrier to maximize thermal insulation. Higher up and in front of windows, larger stones are packed loosely to form a porous screen that lets natural light filter into the interior. The steel wire baskets are structurally anchored back to a primary reinforced concrete frame. Large vehicular and pedestrian passageways are carved through the stone volume, showing the depth and gravity of the assembly.

Visual analysis

From a distance, the facade appears as a solid, dark, minimalist block that reads as an extension of the soil. Up close, this monolithic quality breaks down into a highly detailed, textured mosaic of individual stones. At night, internal lighting transforms the opaque stone mass into a glowing, perforated lantern, revealing the empty spaces between the rocks.
