Facade facts

Facade summary
The facade is composed of four monolithic, parallel fair-faced concrete slabs representing integrated circuit boards, interspersed with three transparent glazed atrium channels representing the 'zeros' and 'ones' of binary code.
Documented intention
Architect Zhu Pei intended the facade to act as a physical manifestation of information technology, capturing the spirit of the 'Digital Olympics'. The binary contrast of solid concrete (1) and void glass (0) was a deliberate narrative strategy to merge structural clarity with digital symbolism.
Street relationship
The monumental scale of the concrete blocks and their lack of traditional windows on the east/west sides present a highly sculptural, defensive, and iconic presence to the public plaza, acting as a functional backdrop to the Olympic Green.
Climate relationship
The thick concrete massing provides high thermal inertia, helping to stabilize indoor temperatures and protect critical data-processing servers from solar heat gain. However, the fully glazed north and south ends require high-performance solar control glass to manage heat gain during Beijing's hot summers.
Window pattern
Arranged in vertical, continuous ribbons between the solid concrete blocks and fully glazed end facades, with minimal individual punch-windows on the solid walls.
Glazing
Double-glazed low-E glass
Depth
The facade has high structural depth, created by the 3D indentation of the circuit grooves (several centimeters deep) and the deep structural recesses of the glazed atrium slots.
Rhythm
An alternating rhythm of massive solid blocks and transparent glass slits, embodying a physical barcode or binary code pattern.
Fair-Faced Concrete
Fair-Faced Concrete — East and West solid facades — Smooth, cast-in-place concrete with form-tie patterns and customized circuit-board grooves
Structural Glass
Structural Glass — Atrium interstitial voids, North and South facades — High-transparency glass pane
LED Lighting Elements
LED Lighting Elements — Embedded within the concrete facade grooves — Linear light strip
Cast-in-place Concrete Wall System
Monolithic, structural fair-faced concrete walls cast with custom-fabricated timber/steel formwork to create precise, integrated circuit-board grooved patterns.
Stick-built Glass Curtain Wall
Aluminum or steel mullion-supported glass curtain wall system spanning the vertical voids between the concrete slabs.

Description

The building's volume is sliced into four massive, linear concrete blocks. The east and west facades of these blocks are treated as solid, jointless-appearing surfaces of fair-faced concrete. These concrete planes are carved with a network of linear, geometric grooves of varying depths and widths, directly evoking the appearance of computer microchips and circuit boards. In contrast, the voids between these concrete blocks are sealed with structural glass curtain walls, creating deep, glazed slot atriums that run the full height and length of the building. The north and south facades offer a contrasting view of the concrete blocks' cut profiles, featuring large expanses of glazing that expose the interior floors. At night, green LED light fixtures embedded inside the concrete grooves illuminate sequentially to mimic the flow of digital information.

Visual analysis

Visually, the building balances monumental, heavy concrete materiality with lightweight, ethereal transparency. The linear grooves break down the overwhelming scale of the solid concrete surfaces, creating an intricate graphic quality that shifts in depth and shadow throughout the day. At night, the physical weight of the concrete dissolves as the glowing green circuitry patterns become the dominant visual element.
